Night flights for a digital terrain model in Frankfurt
Lidar data acquisition and generation of an elevation model
In 2020, the City of Frankfurt commissioned BSF Swissphoto to carry out an airborne lidar data acquisition with a point density of 8-12 points/m2 for the Frankfurt city area including the airport. A total area of 316 km2 was scanned. Height models were created on the basis of the collected Lidar data.
A particular challenge was the fact that the high volume of air traffic in Frankfurt did not permit data acquisition during the day. For this reason, data collection was carried out at night.
An important customer requirement was to avoid shadowing and invisible areas. This was achieved through cross flights and high lateral overlaps of at least 50%.
